Protection for photovoltaics, energy storage systems, drives and automation
Power semiconductors form the backbone of modern energy facilities and industrial systems: ranging from photovoltaic strings and energy storage systems to frequency converters, uninterruptible power supply systems and robotics. In such sensitive applications, every millisecond counts in the event of a fault: SIBA ULTRA rapid® fuse-links interrupt fault currents extremely quickly and in a current-limiting manner, ensuring that the entire system suffers no consequential damage if a fault occurs. This increases system availability, reduces downtime overheads and protects your investment – during ongoing operations and under varying load profiles.
Why select ULTRA rapid® fuse-links from SIBA?
Our ULTRA rapid® fuse-links are specifically designed for semiconductor protection. They combine ultra-fast trigger response with minimal power dissipation to effectively limit thermal and electrical stress. High-quality fine-silver fusible conductors and heat-conductive special ceramics ensure stable values throughout the entire service life.
The ULTRA rapid® range also offers a wide variety of products covering various sizes, types, voltage levels and current ratings.
Depending on your requirements, various designs and integration options are available:
- URZ (cylindrical)
- URB (low-voltage design with screw terminals)
- URM (low-voltage design with blade contacts)
- URS (square design with various contacts)
- URE (British standard)
Additionally, suitable fuse holders, bases, indicator systems and accessories are available to ensure seamless integration.
ULTRA rapid® fuse-links are used wherever power electronics need to be reliably protected: Photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), frequency converters, data centers, automation, railway applications, the process industry, railway technology, as well as wind power and special applications in harsh environments.
In the event of a fault such as an overload or short circuit, they respond particularly quickly thanks to the semiconductor melting element. This minimizes or prevents further damage to the system, avoids consequential costs and enhances protection of the entire installation. This is crucial with such sophisticated systems.
To ensure that ULTRA rapid® fuse-links can be used correctly worldwide, they are based on clearly defined utilization categories and international standards.
Overview of utilization categories
aR – Partial-range protection (short circuit range)
Extremely fast-acting, very low I²t values. Ideal for sensitive semiconductors such as IGBTs, MOSFETs and thyristors.
gR / gRL / gS – Full-range protection
Covers overload and short circuit. For applications where both semiconductors and peripherals need to be protected.
gPV – Photovoltaics
For high DC voltages and the cyclic loads of modern PV strings.
Battery fuses according to IEC 60269-7
aBat – Short circuit range
For battery systems in which overload protection is via the BMS or other electronic components.
gBat – Full-range protection
For stationary storage systems, DC switch cabinets and containerized solutions requiring overload and short circuit protection.
Relevant standards
- IEC 60269-4 – Semiconductor protection (aR / gR)(gS / gRL)
- IEC 60269-6 – Photovoltaic systems (gPV)
- IEC 60269-7 – Battery systems (aBat / gBat)
- UL 248-13 – Semiconductor protection for the US market (aR, gR)
- UL 248-19 – PV fuses (gPV), relevant for solar applications
- IEC 60077-5 – Railway technology (traction and DC onboard systems)
UL certifications
Many UltraRapid® fuse-links have UL Recognized Component (UL rec) approval.
This confirms that the fuse-link may be used as a tested component in UL-certified equipment.
UL Listed applies to complete devices – UL rec is the relevant classification for fuse-links.
