Cyclic loading

Cyclic loading refers to the repeated switching on and off, the frequent starting of loads, or regular power surges during the operation of electrical systems. These dynamic loads have a particular impact on fuse-links when they are operated close to their rated limit – for example in applications involving frequent charging and discharging cycles, such as BESS.

Unlike in the case of a single overcurrent event, repeated thermal and electrical stress can lead to material fatigue – with consequences for fuse tripping characteristics, service life and reliability.

Possible effects of cyclic loading:
  • Fatigue of the fuse conductor – microcracks or material changes inside
  • Changed trigger time – delays or premature triggering possible
  • Heating effects – localized hotspots that accelerate ageing
  • Loss of selectivity – uncontrolled tripping of multiple fuses
  • False trips under normal load – particularly critical during continuous operation close to the rated current limit
